Have you ever seen a water strider?  Well they are insects found in creeks and ponds that seem to walk on water.  But do they really?  Watch this video and find out how they get about.  Then tell me what you know about water striders and what you think about the video.

  16. I don`t think that I have ever seen a water strider but the look kinda cool how they just float along water but i read that they dont really stride the row. I think that since they are so small and so lite that they can just float.

  19. Yes, I have seen a water strider. I see a lot of them at my friend's house(her family owns part of a lake/pond)and we both agreed that they LOOKED like they walk on water, but the water striders really do kind of a rowing motion.

  22. I'm not sure if I have ever seen a water strider but, after watching the video I now know that they row, not walk. This is possible because their legs. They "generate a vortex with every stroke to move." They also are so light so the water acts like a trampoline to them.

  24. To answer your the first qeustion yes i have seen a water strider, there in my creek at the bottom of my hill. As for your seconnd question no they dont walk on water they just row across it. Because even though they should be terrible rowers because there legs are so small but in truth they create vortexs behind them with there leg to push them forward.

  25. I have seen them before but i thought that they floted but instead they really row there legs to move and stay above the water. They lived in my nebros pond and so my 3 older brothers tried to catch them but they went to fast and so when they did catch them they let them go cause they tried to jump out of the continer

  27. Yes I have seen a water strider before. No water striders do not walk on water what they do is glid acrost the water. They use there lags to push off but there lags are as small as a hair so it takes more presher to push off. They can go up to ten times there body. They water strider is vary differnt than othere insects.

  35. I have not seen a water strider before. But I know from the video that water striders do not really walk on water. Instead, water striders row on water. The water striders’ legs are about a hair length in diameter. The woman in the video says that water striders should be terrible at rowing; because it would be like kayaking with a twig. Yet they can glide their body lengths in just one stroke. They generate a vortex with each stroke. Furthermore, they take the vortex and push it behind them, causing them to glide forward. They use the ability of they water surface as a trampoline. This is how they move in water.

  36. @ Jenny Keyser

It’s cool that you have seen a water strider. From the video it does look like they are walking, I agree. But after the video, I kind of saw them rowing instead of walking.

  37. @ Hannah Basil

I agree, since their legs are the diameter of hair and lighter than a feather, that must be why they float. Good inference. =)
