Color: color is what color the mineral is.
luster: the way a mineral reflects light.
streak: the color of streak made when a mineral is rubbed against a hard surface.
cleavage: is when a certain mineral breaks in a definite way.
specific gravity:is its relative weight compared to the weight of an equal volume of water.

color- is not a good clue to identifying a mineral because they can come in multiple

luster- the way a mineral reflects the light (brightness)

streak- made by rubbing the mineral against a hard surface

cleavage- when certain minerals break in a definite way

specific gravity- its relative weight compared to the weight of an equal volume (amount) of water

Mineralogists study rocks and identify them. The term "color" is used to identify minerals that are different colors. The term "luster" is used to tell how well minerals reflect light and minerals can be pearly, glassy, silky, greasy brilliant, or dull. The term "streak" is used to explain what color streak a mineral leaves when it is rubbed across a hard, rough surface. The term "cleavage" is the term used to describe when certain minerals break in a definite way. The term "specific gravity" is the weight of a rock compared to an equal volume of water. It is used to determine the density of a mineral.

Color: The color of a mineral, this is not necessarily used to classify minerals, it can be affected by weathering and chemicals in the rock

Streak: The color of a mark left by a rock when rubbed against other minerals

Cleavage: how a rock breaks apart

Some minerals come in certain colors while others can come in many different colors. Color can be a bad way to identify some minerals. Luster is the way a mineral reflects the light. Minerals can be described as metallic, pearly, glassy, silky, greasy, brilliant, or dull. Streak is when you rub the mineral against something hard and it leaves behind a color, that would be the streak. Cleavage is the way minerals break and crack in a definite way. Specific gravity is the mineral's weight compared to the weight of an equal volume of water. This will then determine the density of the mineral.

  26. If you were planning to bake a pie, what ingredients would you use for the crust? The ingredients used to make the Earth’s crust are complex.

The basic ingredients are known as elements. There are 90 known elements that exist in the Earth’s crust. These elements combine with one another in a number of natural ways, creating molecules known as minerals. There are around 3,700 known minerals found in the Earth’s crust, with dozens of new minerals being discovered each and ever year.

  27. A mineral can be defined as a naturally occurring inorganic solid that possesses an orderly internal structure and a definite chemical composition. Some people, like physicists, might be guilty of picking up a rock and calling it a mineral. The term "rock" is less specific, referring to any solid mass of mineral or mineral-like material. Common rocks are often made up of crystals of several kinds of minerals. There are some substances, like opal, which have the appearance of a mineral but lack any definite internal structure, are sometimes called "mineraloids". Lutgens and Tarbuck give the following list of essential characteristics of a "mineral":

    It must occur naturally.
    It must be inorganic
    It must be a solid
It must possess an orderly internal structure, that is, its atoms must be arranged in a definite pattern.
It must have a definite chemical composition that may vary within specified limits."
The most common minerals are the silicates, as one would guess by looking at the abundances of the elements in the Earth's crust, but there is a great variety of minerals. Minerals are classified in many ways, including hardness, optical properties, crystal structure, etc. Shipman, et al. comment that over 2000 minerals have been found in the Earth's crust, but that about 20 of them are common and fewer than 10 account for over 90% of the crust by mass.

Non-silicates constitute less than 10% of the Earth's crust. The most common non-silicates are the carbonates, the oxides, and the sulfides. There are also naturally occuring phosphates and salts. There are a few elements which occur in pure form, including gold, silver, copper, bismuth, arsenic, lead and tellurium. Carbon is found in both graphite and diamond form. Some minerals are valued as gems because of their hardness, color and beauty.
