We were wondering, how did they determine the scale and the hardness of the minerals? Now that we read, we understand the ordering of the scale, but we still wonder how the order was decided.

We find it very interesting that the hardness of rocks is organized into a scale of 1 to 10. We already knew that diamond was the hardest mineral, but we did not know that talc was weakest.

We found it interesting that a fingernail scratches talc easily. We knew diamond was the hardest mineral. We wonder why they made a scale of hardness.

Is any other way to determine the hardness of the mineral other than scratching it? But, that is impressive how the mineral is determined but the way it scratches.
