When warm air rises and cold air sinks (convection) it plays a role in the formation of severe thunderstorms. If the warm surface air is forced to rise, it will continue to rise, because it is less dense than the surrounding air. it will also transfer heat from the land surface to upper levels of the atmosphere through the process of convection.

Lightning happens when the negative charges (electrons) in the bottom of the cloud are attracted to the positive charges (protons) in the ground. The accumulation of electric charges has to be great enough to overcome the insulating properties of air. When this happens, a stream of negative charges pours down towards a high point where positive charges have clustered due to the pull of the thunderhead.

We agree that the positive charges cluster at a high point from the pull of the thunderhead. That is why you shouldn't be near trees or flag poles during a storm because you could get electrocuted.

Convection is one of the main causes of thunder storms, convection is when hot air rises and cold air sinks. There are three main types of thunderstorms; orographic, air mass, and frontal. Orographic thunderstorms are caused by air that is forced up by a mountain or hillside.Air mass thunderstorms are the result of localized convection in an unstable air mass. Frontal thunderstorms occur along the boundaries of weather fronts. Lightning happens when negative charges in the bottom of clouds are attracted to positive charges in the ground. When there are enough negative charges there is force enough to overcome the insulating properties of air and charges down towards the positive charges. At this point the positive charges rush up to meet the negative ones and form lightning.

Thunderstorms form somewhat like tornadoes. They form from a combination of conduction, radiation, and convection. First, the sun heats the earth in radiation. Then, since the earth is in direct contact with the air above it, it heats up that air in conduction. Finally, the hot air rises and forces cooler air to sink, in a process called convection. This moving air results in thunder storms.

There are three types of thunder storms. One of them is caused by large mountains or hills pushing the air up, and those types are called orographic. Another type of thunder storm is an air mass storm, and those are caused by convection in an unstable air mass. Finally, frontal thunder storms occur on weather fronts (cold fronts, warm fronts, stationary fronts).

Lightning occurs when the negative charges of the bottom of a cloud are attracted to the positive charges in the ground. Once they connect, the negative and positive charges rush to meet each other and form not only lightning, but also thunder.

Warm air rising and cool air sinking, this is called convection, play a key role in forming thunderstorms. Two important ingredients to form thunderstorms are unstable air and moisture. We learned that there are 3 mains types of thunderstorms; orographic, air mass, and frontal. Lightning occurs when negative charges in the bottom of clouds and positive charges in the ground attract. When a stream of negative charges pours down toward the positive charges a connection is made. The protons meet with the electrons causing lightning.

From the thunder section, we learned that convection is when warm air rises. Also, we learned that conduction is when the sun warms the earth and the earth warms the air above it. Warm air rising, and cool air sinking plays a key role in the formation of thunderstorms. Lightning happens when electrons are attracted to the positive protons on the ground. When protons meet with the electrons, we see lightning and hear thunder. We also learned that thunder is the sound of the air expanding.

To tell the truth I knew nothing on how thunder storms form so this was an interesting read. I learned that when the sun heats the earth, then energy from the earth transfers to the air this is called conduction. I also learned that there are three different types of storms, air mass, organic, and frontal. Air mass thunderstorms are the result of localized convection in an unstable air mass. Orographic thunderstorms are caused by air that is forced up by a mountain or hillside. Frontal thunderstorms occur along the boundaries of weather fronts.

With the lightning i knew the basics like how it occurs. Lightning happens when the negative charges (electrons) in the bottom of the cloud are attracted to the positive charges (protons) in the ground. But I didn't know that the accumulation of electric charges has to be greater than the insulating properties of air. Lightning heats the air along its path causing it to expand rapidly. Thunder is the sound caused by the rapidly expanding air.

But we do agree with your explanations on how lightning and thunderstorms are formed. We agree with you when you tell us negative charges are attracted and then connect to positive charges in the ground and that's how lightning is formed, and how thunder is formed is our exact words, its the rapid expanding of air.

  12. I have learned that a key role in thunderstorms forming is warm air rising and cold air sinking, (convection). If warm air that it on the surface that is forced to rise, will continue to rise because it is less dense then the air surrounding it. However two of the important things to make a thunderstorm is unstable air and moisture.

Lightning happens when the electrons in the bottom of the cloud are attracted to the protons in the ground. For lighting to produce the number of electric charges has to overcome the insulating properties of air. If this happens lighting will be produced.

First the sun warms the earth and the heat rises into the air and condenses. The warm air causes the water to evaporate and it rises into the air. Cold air then condenses the vapor into clouds, if the clouds get big enough they can form a thunderstorm. Lightning comes down when the electrons in the bottom of clouds are attracted to the protons in the earth. The electrons have to overcome the insulating properties of air, and when it does, a stream of negative charge comes down and a connection is made between protons and electrons. And thunder is caused by the rapid expanding of air.

I learned several things about the formation of thunderstorms. I learned that unstable air is one of the most important factors that contribute to thunderstorms. Air is unstable if it is warmer than surrounding air, its temperature will make it rise. There are three main types of thunderstorms, orographic thunderstorms, air mass thunderstorms and frontal thunderstorms. Orographic thunderstorms form because air is forced up because of a mountain or hill. Air mass thunderstorms form because convection is localized in an unstable air mass. Frontal thunderstorms form along the edge of a weather front. Lightning forms when the electrons in a thunderstorm cloud are attracted by the protons in a high standing object. If the charge is great enough then we will see lightning. The thunder happens because the heat causes the air to expand quickly.

Thunderstorms:The warm surface in the air is forced to rise, it will keep rise because it is less than the surrounding air. There are three main types of thunderstorms: orographic, air mass, and frontal. The Orographic thunderstorms are caused by air that is forced up by a mountain or hillsides. The Air mass thunderstorms are the result of localized convection in an unstable air mass.Frontal thunderstorms occur along the boundaries of weather fronts.E.X:cold fronts.
Lightening:Lightning happens when the negative charge in the bottom of the cloud are attracted to the positive charges in the ground.A bolt of lightning heats the air up along its path causing it to expand rapidly. When this happens a stream of negative charges pours down towards a high point where positive charges are more with rise.Thunder is the sound caused by rapidly expanding air.

  44. Ms.Dietrich,
Thunderstorms form from rising heat from the sun. When the heat is rising it goes into the upper atmosphere and cold air is sinking this is called convection.Convection is a very important part in forming thunderstorms. The 2 most important in ingredients for thunderstorm formation are instability and moisture. There are 3 main types of thunderstorms orographic, air mass, and frontal.Orographic thunderstorms are caused by air that is forced up by a mountain or hillside.Air mass thunderstorms are the result of localized convection in an unstable air mass.Frontal thunderstorms occur along the boundaries of weather fronts.

Lightning forms when the negative charges (electrons) are in the bottom of a cloud that are attracted to the positive charges (protons) in the ground. The accumulation of electric charges has to be great enough to overcome the insulating properties of air. When this happens a stream of negative charges pours down towards a high point where positive charges are clustered due to the pull of the thunderhead.

  45. 2 of the most important things to form a thunder storm are instability[unstable air] and and moister. There are 3 main types of thunderstorms air mass, orthographic and frontal thunderstorms.
Air Mass- The result of localized convection in an unstable air mass.
Orthographic-Caused by air that is forced up by a mountain or hillside.
Frontal-occur along the boundaries of weather fronts.[cold front]
When there's a intense line of thunderstorms its called a squall line.
Super cell- Occur when strong updrafts are balanced by downdrafts so the storm can last for hours.

Lighting happens when negative[electrons] charges in the bottom of a cloud are attracted to a positive charge in the ground.[protons]
the accumulation of electric charges needs to be great enough to overcome insalating properties so when that happens a negative charge goes down where a high point positive charge has clustrared together due to the pull of the thunderhead

When warm air rises and cold air sinks (convection) it plays a role in the formation of severe thunderstorm. Orographic thunderstorms are caused by air that is forced up by a mountain or hillside.First, the sun heats the earth in radiation. Then, since the earth is in direct contact with the air above it, it heats up that air in conduction.

We learned that, Tornado's can happen at any time during a thunderstorm. Tornado's can be very dangerous and deadly. Lighting, can also strike at any time during a thunderstorm. Lighting can kill or injure a person very badly. Lighting usually strike's at tall building's or tree's. That's why you have too be very careful, uring thunderstorm's.

With the lightning i knew the basics like how it occurs. Lightning happens when the negative charges in the bottom of the cloud are attracted to the positive charges in the ground. But I didn't know that the accumulation of electric charges has to be greater than the insulating properties of air. Lightning heats the air along its path causing it to expand rapidly. Thunder is the sound caused by the rapidly expanding air. I knew nothing on how thunder storms form so this was an interesting read. I learned that when the sun heats the earth, then energy from the earth transfers to the air this is called conduction. I also learned that there are three different types of storms, air mass, organic, and frontal. Air mass thunderstorms are the result of localized convection in an unstable air mass. Orthographic thunderstorms are caused by air that is forced up by a mountain or hillside.

Something we learned about thunder storms is it occur the most in Florida. Its true that the ocean surrounding the state provides lot of moisture, this causes a thunder storm. Thunder storms form because of warm air rising and cold air sinking.Lighting happens when negative charges in the clouds are attracted to positive charges in the ground. When the connection of the negative and positive charges are made protons rush together creating lighting. Something we learned is that if you squat down in the middle of an open area with your feet on the ground you will not get hit by lighting.

Thunderstorms form when the sun evaporates water to from clouds. Then the when the cold air comes down the clouds go up.And then when the temp rises it gits bigger.Last it stores up enough water to state the storm. The positive charge from the tree. And the negative charge from the clouds collide and make lightening.
