Chinese Enter the Space Age

China launched an experimental spacecraft from the Gobi desert this week. The unmanned Tiangong-1 (which means "Heavenly Palace-1") is expected to orbit Earth for two years. Journalist Miles O’Brien discusses planned docking missions for the craft and China’s space program.  Listen to the article and tell me what you think.  How do you feel about China becoming a space power?  Why do you think the Chinese want to accomplish with their space program?

  1. I knew it was coming but not this soon they are creating another space race. They think they are smarter than us now the government is going to want to give us back our space program.
The want to be better than our space program that is the bad thing. but they can't because we are much farther along than them i wouldn't wish them good luck!

We don't think that it is very good because we were the ones to first come up with the technology to acomplish this and we feel that they are steeling our ideas. We think that the Chinese are doing this to try and prove that they are better than us but they are not.It could also be that they want to be someone that discovers things about the other planets too.

It feels weird because they are trying ti replicate the U. S. space station. Because they want to be able to make militaristic space ships.

We still think that the Chinese are trying to be more militaristic, by blowing up one of there own satellite with a ballistic missile.

  5. I didn't think china would create a space program. Even if they have one ours is better because we started in the 1960's and China is starting now which is to late. It will take china a while to catch up with us but they still think their rocket is better than ours. The U.S.A has more experience in rocket engineering and China has almost none. I think they are trying to prove their better than us which I don't think they are.

We feel good about China making a space station. With another space station there's a better chance to find a new planet or something new about the solar system. China will probably try to visit the moon or something like that.

  7. i fell fine that the chines are entering space. Because the want to to go and be like every one else and have a space progrom

  8. I don't like the idea of China becoming a space power because they already have a lot of power economically, and I don't think they need another achievement that they can hold over our heads. I think that the Chinese people want to accomplish a lot of things with their space program. The first thing is obvious: they want to learn more about space. (A lot of countries want that.) I also think that the Chinese want to prove that they are better than us by creating a space program that does something different than what ours does. I know that the article said that it is not a space race, but they can still attempt to do something better than us.

  9. @ wade stenger I disagree because if they find something we already found they will take credit (like a planet or moon we have not made a name for yet).

We think China should be able to have a space program also! I don't think we should be the only country able to explore space. The more people in space the higher chance of finding a really amazing discovery! But we are concerned that there space program could cause arguments and war so hopefully they don't brag. Maybe we could colonize on mars moon like it said in the moon video.

Don't you think that it is somewhat bad that the Chinese are building a space program? They already have more power than us economically, so it would be really bad if they became better than us in their space program.

I agree that we shouldn't be the only country allowed in space, but we aren't. The Russians have had many trips to space as well. Also, it would be nice if there was an amazing discovery in space, but we want to be the ones that actually make that amazing discovery, so that the Chinese don't have something to hold over our heads.

What are they planning on using the spacecraft for? We hope that the U.S. doesn't fall behind on space crafts. The may want to succeed because a lot of other countries have their own space program and they need to be able to compete with other countries for the financial and scientific aspect of the program.

We agree. It would be really bad if the US ran behind on space crafts. We must explore the great nothingness.

  28. I thought China had already gotten a space program because they're so far ahead of us in technology you would think they had a space program. I think they needed to get a program because so many other countries have one and they need to be able to compete with them. I think they also want to know more in science so they need spacecrafts to explore space, they probably also did this because of financial topics.

@ Connor Zang: We agree that there may be a chain reaction in other countries that don't have space programs, they may end up making their own programs to catch up with every one else. The entire world should engage in space programs so if someone from another country wants to be an astronaut they can still stay in their own country.

  66. I think that it is a bad thing because they are trying to compete with the U.S, and are upgrading more every day. However, there is no rule saying that they aren't allowed to launch it.
