Earthquake highlights

What is an earthquake?  What causes earthquakes and where do they happen? Why does the earth shake when there is an earthquake?  How do scientists measure earthquakes?  Can they predict earthquakes?  How can scientists tell where an earthquake happened?  Is there earthquake weather and can animals or people tell when an earthquake is about to hit?

  1. An earthquake is what happens when two of the pieces of the earth bump into each other. Earthquakes are caused by the edges of plate boundaries getting stuck on each other, and slipping, therefore shaking the area. It shakes because, when the two edges of the fault get stuck on each other, the energy is stored, and is released more strongly, resulting in shaking.
    Scientists use seismographs to measure the size of earth quakes. The seismograph creates a wiggle that demonstrates the size of the earth quake. The larger the wiggle, the larger the fault is, and the larger the earthquake was. Scientists can measure earthquakes, but they have absolutely no way of predicting when they will occur.
    Scientists use specific types of seismic waves, and then triangulation to locate the source of the earthquake. It is called triangulation because "tri" means three, and the locating of an earthquake uses three different seismographs. The scientists draw circle around three different seismograph locations on a map, with the radius being the distance from the tool to the earthquake, and where the three circles intersect, is the epicenter.
    Scientists do not understand whether animals or humans can guess when an earthquake is coming. They also do not know whether there is specific whether before or after an earthquake.

An earthquake is when 2 plates slip past each other. earthquake happens when a fault slips. earthquakes shake because when the faults are stuck together but the rest of the earth is still moving. they use an object called a seismograph. The size depends on the size of the fault. They do not know if humans or animals can predict earthquakes.

      People can't tell when an earth quake is about to happen but, they can make inferences around when it may happen and dogs can tell and many people have dogs and so it may help.

When the force of the moving blocks finally overcomes the friction of the jagged edges of the fault and it unsticks, all that stored up energy is released.Earthquakes are recorded by things called seismographs.Scientist can not predict when there will be an earthquake.Scientist can tel where the earthquakes where because of the seismographs.

The earth shakes during an earthquake because seismic waves shake the earth as they move through it, and when they reach the surface of the earth they shake the ground. Scientists can tell where an earthquake happened by using a method called triangulation. Scientists don't have the answers on if there is earthquake weather, or if animals and people can tell if an earthquake is coming.

  8. An earthquake is what happens when two blocks of earth suddenly slip past one another. At tectonic plate boundaries earthquakes occur when plates slip past each other and are normally felt only on fault lines. When the plates a sliding past each other they store up energy and when this energy overcomes the plates the earth shakes and causes a earthquake. Earthquakes are measured using a seismograph. The seismograph has a firmly planted base and a heavy weight that hangs freely, when the earth shakes the base moves but the weight stays still. Scientists know where a earthquake happened by measuring the p and s waves. P and s waves shake the ground in different ways as they travel through it. P waves are faster then s waves and that is how we know where earthquakes occurred. Scientists can not predict when earthquakes are going to happen. If weather does effect earthquake occurrence, or if some animals or people can tell when an earthquake is coming, we do not yet understand how it works.

    An earthquake is when two plates slip past each other. Earthquakes are caused by faults in the earth's layer's under the ground. They happen around plate boundaries. Scientists use seismographs to measure earthquakes. No scientists can not predict when an earthquake will happen. scientists use seismographs to find where earthquakes happen. Scientists do not have a definite answer to know if we can use weather to find out if an earthquake can happen.

  11. An Earthquake is when two blocks of the Earth slide past, push against eachother or move away from eachother. The Earth shakes because the plates un-stick and it releases a big amount of energy. Scientists use Seismographs to measure earthquakes. Earthquakes are not predictable. There will be broken buildings cracks in the road and maybe aftershocks. Scientists don't know if humans or animals can detect an earthquake. They also don't know if there is there is any specific weather that follows or comes before an earthquake.

  15. An earth quake is a natural disaster that makes the earth shake it may be very dangerous. It is because of plate tectonics when two plates hit each other it causes the earth to rumble. The seismograph
    measures the strength of the earth quake. I wonder how animals can guess when natural disasters are coming but, its very cool.

    I agree with what you said. I think it is important to know what the scientists use to know where the earthquake happened. In my answer I said they use the method called triangulation, and I also was thinking that they use the seismographs too.

Since the edges of the plate boundaries are rough, they get stuck while the rest of the plate keeps moving and when the plates unstick on one of the faults it causes an earthquake. Earthquakes are recorded by an instrument called seismograph. No they can't, they can only measure how strong they are when they happen. Scientist use the P wave and the S wave to tell where earthquakes happen. No there is no earthquake and people or animals can tell if an earthquake will hit.

Scientists can measure earthquakes.Scientists then use a method called triangulation to determine exactly where the earthquake was. It is called triangulation because a triangle has three sides, and it takes three seismographs to locate an earthquake. If you draw a circle on a map around three different seismographs where the radius of each is the distance from that station to the earthquake, the intersection of those three circles is the epicenter. Scientists still have not been able to determine whether humans or animals can tell when an earthquakes coming. or whether weather affects earthquakes

    An earthquake is a sudden shake in the ground. An earthquake is what happens when two fault planes suddenly slip past one another. The earth shakes when there is an earthquake because while the faults are stuck together, the rest of it is moving and the energy that would normally cause the blocks to slide past one another is being stored up. The force of the moving blocks finally overcomes the friction which makes it unstick, it then is released. Scientist measure earthquakes by looking at seismograph recordings. We can not predict earthquakes, we have tried many things but none were successful. Scientist can tell where an earthquake happened by using a method called triangulation. That question is unknown and if it is possible, we haven't understood how it works.

The earthquake happens when the tectonic plates grind against each other. Scientists measure earthquakes with seismographs, a device that measures the tremors of the earthquakes. By looking at these measurements they can tell how bad the quake will be, but unfortunately they have no way of predicting these earthquakes will occur. Scientists can tell when an earthquake happens because of the sesmic waves caused by the earthquake, they use these waves to calculate where it was. scientists do not know how a human or animal could guess other than the darkening of clouds and harder winds, but that could just mean a thunder storm.

    An earthquake is caused when the edges of the plates move past each other and since the edges of the plates are rough, they might get stuck while the rest of the plate keeps moving. When the plate moves far enough the edges get unstuck and that causes an earthquake. Earthquakes happen at fault lines which are the edges of plates.
    The earth vibrates because when the force of the moving plates finally overcomes the friction of the jagged edges, all of the energy is released. The energy goes out in ripples called seismic waves and when the waves reach the surface they shake the ground.
    Scientists use seismographs to measure earthquakes. When there is an earthquake, the base of the seismograph moves, but the weight on it doesn't and the difference of the weights position and the bases position is recorded.
    Scientist's cannot predict earthquakes and probably never will be able to. They've tried to predict them in many different ways, but they've never been successful. All they can do is say that on any fault there will be an earthquake in the future.
    Scientists can tell where an earthquake was because P waves travel faster than S waves. If you are close to an earthquake the waves will happen close to the same time, but if you're fara way they will not. Then they use triangulation to find exact position.

Scientist don't know whether there is a certain weather for earthquakes and no human or animal can predict an earthquake as far as we know.

The edges of a fault (or where 2 plates meet) often build up energy from being pressed to another plate and when they brake away all the energy is sent out and it rumbles the earth. Scientist recorded these earthquakes with a tool called a seismogram, But scientist can not fully predict where these quakes will happen. Scientist use different type waves from traveling from the earth quake at different speeds. These waves are called "P" and "S" waves. People do not no if there is earthquake weather or if animals or people tell when an earthquake is about to hit.

These usually occur on fault lines. Earthquakes shake the ground because when the plates are stuck together energy builds up and when they get unstuck that energy is released and seismic waves move through the ground and shake everything. Scientist measure earthquakes by using seismographs. Scientist cannot predict earthquakes. Scientist can tell when an earthquake happens by measuring the time it takes between the P and S waves. Scientist do not know if there is earthquake weather or if animals can tell people when one will happen.

  43. An earthquake is the energy released when plate boundaries "un-stick." They are caused by plate boundaries releasing energy. The energy released is the earthquake. The earth shakes during earthquakes because energy is being released all at once. Seismographs are used to record earthquakes and the recording they make is called a seismogram. Scientists can't predict earthquakes, and we aren't sure if they ever will be able to; however we can make better buildings and structures to help protect against disaster. They can find out where an earthquake was by using triangulation. Triangulation works by measuring P and S waves, since P waves move faster than S waves do we can measure how far away an earth quake was,if we do this for three points then we can find the epicenter. We are not sure if earthquakes have to do with weather or if animals can predict earthquakes. If they can predict earthquakes we aren't sure how it works yet.

An earthquake is what happens when tow of earth's tectonic plates collide or grind together until the building pressure is released and the ground starts shaking, causing earth shattering results. These earthquakes happen along plate boundaries or faults. Seismogram recordings show scientist how large an earthquake was. If the line isn't very wiggly it was a small earthquake, if the line is very wiggly the earthquake was big. Seismograms can locate earthquakes as well as measure them, it takes three seismograms to pinpoint a quake, once the scientist do some calculating they can draw three circles on a map around the seismogram stations and where all the circles intercept, that's where the quake was. So far, no. Scientists can't predict when or where and earthquake will hit. And if a human or animal can predict them, scientists don't yet know how. There is no weather that shows when an earthquake will hit, weather changes nothing about an earthquake.

The friction between the faults makes energy that shakes the earths surface and anything on it when it reaches it. Scientist measure when earthquakes occur with a seismograph, but cannot predict when they will occur next. Scientist can tell when an earthquake has happened by the S and P waves that pick up on the shaking of the earth's surface. It is not yet known if humans and/or animals can know when an earthquake will occur by the weather happening during an earthquake.

So there might be little damage or there might be major damage done where the earthquake hit. No scientist can not predict earthquakes they have tried many differnt ways to predict an earthquake but they all have failed in that so far.There is not a definet answer yet, but they think that some animals and people can tell when one will come. They do not understand yet how some people and animals can tell but it just depends on it. They do not know if there is earthquake weather or if there is not a earthquake weather yet.

  81. i say that the plate tetonics on the earth when they rub and then make a quake that is neat how it works and the fact that they fit together like a puzule piece i think is true and that the crust cant get as hot as the mantel and that undergroud like until fifty feet is weird because it is closer to the core and should be hotter and i didnt know that the plate tectonics have different forces and that they can produce different power thatn others and can make more powerful earthquakes than others.

    The earth shakes when there is an earthquake because While the edges of faults are stuck together, and the rest of the block is moving the energy that would normally cause the boundaries to slide past one another is being stored up. When the force of the moving boundaries finally unsticks all that stored up energy is released. The energy goes outward from the fault in all directions in the form of seismic waves like ripples on a pond. The seismic waves shake the earth as they move through it, and when the waves reach the earth’s surface, they shake the ground and anything on it.Scientists use seismographs to measure the size of earth quakes. The seismograph creates a wiggle that demonstrates the size of the earth quake. The larger the wiggle, the larger the fault is, and the larger the earthquake was. Scientists can measure earthquakes, but they have absolutely no way of predicting when they will occur.
    Scientists use specific types of seismic waves, and then triangulation to locate the source of the earthquake. It is called triangulation because "tri" means three, and the locating of an earthquake uses three different seismographs. The scientists draw circle around three different seismograph locations on a map, with the radius being the distance from the tool to the earthquake, and where the three circles intersect, is the epicenter.
    Scientists do not understand whether animals or humans can guess when an earthquake is coming. They also do not know whether there is specific whether before or after an earthquake.

An earthquake is caused by when two tectonic plates rubbing against one another and they mostly occur between the plate boundaries. The energy that is usually moving the plate is being stored up and finally the energy is realist causing an earthquake that is moving in all directions. Scientist record earthquakes by using a seismograph and they measure earthquakes by using a seismogram. Seismogram also let you locate the earthquake by letting you know if its a p or a s wave. No they can not they have tried but it never worked. So far they have not been able to tell if their is a weather for it or if animals and people cn tell

The earth shakes when there is an earthquake because the edges of the faults are stuck together and the rest of the block is moving the energy would would normally cause blocks to slide past one another and is being stored when the blocks move the friction of Jagged edges of fault unstick and moves in different ways. Scientists measure earthquakes by using a seismogram recording at the surface of the earth. No scientists can not predict where earthquake will happen. Scientists can tell where an earthquake happened by using a method called a Triangulation to found out where the earthquakes happened. People and animals can not tell when an earthquake will hit because they don't understand how it works.

Scientists measure earthquakes with a seismograph, which makes a recording of the earthquake called a "seismogram". No, scientists cannot predict when a earthquake will happen, and it is highly improbable that scientists will ever be able to. Scientists can tell where an earthquake has happened, they use a method called triangulation to find where it occurred. No, there is no such thing as "earthquake weather" and animals and/or people cannot tell when an earthquake is about to hit.
