Yellowstone

We have been studying plate movements and how it relates to volcanoes.  How do scientist know that the plates are moving?  What tools do they use to measure the changes at Yellowstone National Park?  What has recently been happening at Yellowstone?  Is this something new or has it been happening before?  How is this linked to the hot springs and geysers?  Read the article and watch the video to find out.  Give us your thoughts based upon the evidence.

Yellowstone Uplift

  1. The scientists know that the plates are moving because, their tools have showed them that the volcano, at Yellowstone, is gradually rising. The tools that the scientists use are a Global Positioning System (GPS) and a specific type of radar (InSAR). Recently, Yellowstone has been rising, and this is somewhat normal for Yellowstone because research shows that Yellowstone has continually been rising and falling. This is somewhat related to the hot geysers because the hydrothermal energy underneath Yellowstone (that causes the geysers to spray water) could very well be the cause of the swelling.

  2. Scientists know that plates move because they release gas and steam from the Earth's core. They use tools like GPS and inSAR(gives ground detentions). The magma has been moving toward the surface. This has been moving since 2004. This is linked be cause when it comes in contact to the surface it release the steam and causes geysere.

    1. I agree but I thought that the reason that geysers were linked to volcanoes was because when the volcano heats up it also heats up water that is already there, so it expands and leaks out.

Scientists can tell that the plates are moving by Earthquakes and Volcanoes Erupting. They use seismographs to measure Earthquakes. Grey wolves have returned and geysers and hot mud are appearing. It's all happened about 600000 years ago. The lava is heating the mud and water causing it to bubble and fly in the air.

  4. The scientists know that the plates are moving because in 2004 the volcano started to rise, the tools the scientists used to figure this out was a GPS and an inSAR these tools are used to track and measure the rise of the volcano. Recently the resiover has swelled, they think it swells about.01 per year. this is pretty normal for yellow stone. yellow stone is linked to hot springs and geysers because when the volcano heats up it leaks releasing scalding hot water.

  5. Scientists think a swelling magma reservoir four to six miles (seven to ten kilometers) below the surface is driving the uplift. They use tools such as global positioning systems (GPS) and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR), which gives ground-deformation measurements. Yellowstone has erupted in the recent geological past, so scientists' know that the magma has shallow depths. This has happened before. The Yellowstone links to hot geysers because there is hydrothermal energy under the Yellowstone. This could be why the swelling occurs.

Scientists know the plates are moving because when they crash together they cause earthquakes and we have earthquakes sometimes. They use GPS and inSAR to measure changes at Yellowstone. The ground has been recently rising because the volcano is breathing. It has been happening for the past 15,000 years. The magma powers the hydro thermal system that runs Yellowstone's geysers.

This is somewhat related to the hot geysers because the hydrothermal energy underneath Yellowstone (that causes the geysers to spray water) could very well be the cause of the swelling.Garbett

  79. Scientist know the plates are moving because they use a tool and found that Yellowstone keeps rising. The tools that they use are GPS and InSAR to measure the changes Yellowstone. In recent time Yellowstone has been rising and its quite normal for it to be doing this. The geysers under neath Yellowstone are related

  83. The ground of Yellowstone above is rising at rates of 2.8 inches and lower. The tools used at Yellowstone are GPS and INSAR. Yellowstone has been rising and falling a lot latley. This problem is fairly new. The geysers let out energy so thee hot springs must be holding in energy.

  84. I know that the magma chamber is only 4 miles under Yellowstone. The scientists know the plates are moving because the volcano was inflating, and deflating. The scientists know the plates are moving because the volcano was inflating, and deflating. At the Yellowstone ground near the volcanoes have been rising 10 inches in the past 5 years recently.

  85. I think scantest should help the government by helping them make a hole in the ground around any volcano so when the erupt the magma will then go in to the ground instead of killing wiled life or destroying things.

  86. scientist know that because mountains earth quake and volcanoes thay use gps. the ground is moving alot. it is allso releasing eneargy through the springs

  87. Scientist know that the plates move because of their tools and the ground rising. The tools scientist use are an InSAR and a GPS. Recently at Yellowstone the ground has been rising because the magma that is 4 miles underneath is causing the ground to rise. This has happened before. Its related to geysers because there is hydro thermal energy below Yellowstone.

  89. Scientists know that plates are moving because of measurements taken by their GPS and InSAR, which detect groung deformation. Over several years the ground at Yellowstone has risen 10 inches, this is part of a regular cycle where the ground at Yellowstone Rises and falls. The magma in the caldera heats the geysers and hot springs at Yellowstone.

  90. since 2007 and 201010 the plates have only moved inches(25 centimeters). They use the USGS.A large volcano has been resting under Yellowstone.over hot springs, gicers, steam vents, and boiling mud.

  92. Scientist know how the plates move because they use GPS systems by the geysers and hot water.

  93. When earthquakes occur and other stuff. They use global positioning systems and interferometric synthetic aperture radar. The ground has been uprising.yes it has.Because of uprising and there is magma under yellowstone so because of that it is going to bring heat and geysers and hot springs. Are going to appear and happen.

  94. scientists can see if the ground is moving because of their type of tools that they use. they use a GPS and an InSAR. yellow stone`s ground has recently been rising because of the magma 4 miles underground. this is related to geysers because of ther hypo thermal energy below the ground.

  97. Scientist know that the plates are moving because they have seen the plates move 2.8 a year. They use GPS and InSAR. Yellowstone has been gaining and losing magma for 15,000. They are linked because the geysers release the energy and hot springs hold the energy.

  98. Scientist know the plates are moving because the plates move 2.8 inches a year. They used a GPS and a INSAR to measure the changes at Yellow Stone National park had. Yellow Stone has been losing magma and no it's not new because it has been losing magma for a long time now. This is linked to the hot spring and Geysers because the mud bubbles release toxic air and the hot spring hold the toxic air.

  99. they know because when plates move they can cause earthquakes which can cause volcanic eruptions. the tools they use are InSAR and some kind of GPS. Yellow stone ha risen about ten inches this is new.this links to springs and geysers because it may be causing the swelling.
