Science Friday visited Queens ice sculptor Shintaro Okamoto in his studio and spoke with ice researcher Erland Schulson, of Dartmouth University, to find out why ice is an interesting subject for artists and scientists.
Ode to Ice
The gases that get trapped inside of the ice cause it to be cloudy. Cracks form on ponds because the surface is colder than the inside. The colder surface shrinks, and the warm inside expands, putting stress on the surface, causing it to crack.
ReplyDeleteWe found it interesting that it was able to withstand the pressure of the sculpting knives without collapsing or falling apart.
All I know is that ice can be as hard as concrete or rocks and it can melt over time due to heat from the sun.-Dominic Deutsch
ReplyDeletethe only theing i know about ice is when it is in the sun it will melt and turn in to water .
