Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediments, such as sand, rock fragments, mud, and dirt, build up and are pressed together over very long periods of time. Some sedimentary rocks are limestone and shale.
Sedimentary rock forms in water, and water makes up 70% of the earth, so this type of rock is common everywhere.

  3. Sedimentary rocks form when sediment in a river piles on top of its self and hardens into rock. Sedimentary rocks include shale, sandstone, and coal. Sedimentary rock forms mostly in water and the Earth is 70% water so that is how common sedimentary rocks are. Sedimentary rock is what we find most of are fossils in so that is how sedimentary rock can tell us about are past.

70% of all of the rocks on earth are sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary rocks form when sediments pile up and are pressed together in layers. As sedimentary rocks form remains of dead animals or plants can be pressed into them creating a fossil; we can learn about past life on earth by studying these fossils. Some types of sedimentary rocks include: Sandstone, Shale, Limestone, Conglomerate, etc.
