What do you think?

Did the rock labs we completed in class help you in understanding the different types of rocks, their characteristics and how to identify them?  What did you think of these different labs?  Did you like doing them or not?  How would you have preferred to learn about the different rock types (yes, you do have to learn about them!)

Yes, the rock labs in class did help us understand the different types of rocks and how to identify them. The rocks labs were okay. No, we both did not like doing the rock labs. We would have preferred to learn about the different rocks by going outside and looking at different types of rocks.

We do agree that it would have been fun and more challenging to look for and identify rocks from nature, but the labs we did were very educational and interesting as well. We learned how sedimentary rocks form in layers, by stacking pieces in a graduated cylinder, and we learned the differences between types of rocks with all of the identification labs.
The labs that we did may not have been very exciting, but they were atleast somewhat interesting.

Yes, the rock labs did help us understand types of rocks better. I think the rock labs were fun. I like doing them better than reading assignments. I would have liked to go outside and search for what types of rocks are in our area.

  3. We thought they definitely helped out but we would change the fill in the blank read along papers. It helped us understand the differences between clastic rocks and non-clastic rocks. We thought these different labs were interesting. We didn't like doing them that much, but that's because it's school work. We would've wanted to see rocks that came from around here, like maybe taking advantage of all the trails in the back of the school or something along the lines of that.

Yeah, we agree that it would have been a good idea to search for rocks around the school, but we didn't even think of all of the trails around here. With the creek so close by, there would have been a lot of sedimentary rocks, most likely.

Yes, the rock labs did help us to better understand rock types and characteristics. Our favorite rock labs were the ones where we attempted to identify which of the rocks they were, out of a certain type. We liked this lab because it helped us to better observe differences between the different rocks. We liked the labs that we did, but it would have been fun to go outside to search for and identify rocks from nature. It would have been more challenging because there is no "key" to tell us for sure what the rocks were.

I know, it would be fun because there would be no key, and we would have to figure it out on our own and not just depend on the teacher to tell us if it's right or wrong.

Yes, the rock labs did help us understand the type of rocks better. I think these labs could have been a little bit more creative. I liked doing them twice or three times a week but not everyday because they get really boring. We would like to travel around the world, and study all of the different types of rocks we find, and compare them to each other.

Yes because we learned learned that the size of the rock pieces effected the type of rock it was, and we never knew that. The labs were pretty fun, not as fun as the volcano and and some of the stuff we did last year, but way more fun that just filling out a work sheet. We did like doing the labs. I would have liked to go outside to the woods and found our own rocks, then come inside and figure them out based on the characteristics.

Yeah, it helped us learn that the size of the rock affects it. I liked the lab for the volcanoes more, but for looking at rocks, theres really no way to make something erupt or explode. So therefore, I really liked this lab.

I really liked the labs that we did. However, I think that it should have been matching all of the rock types in stead of not having certain rocks. Some of the rocks did not match the descriptions on the paper (one of our rocks reacted with acid that was not supposed to). I really liked the metamorphic rock lab because it was shorter and much easier. I liked the worksheets that we had with them because they taught me a lot and the ideas of crystallization while the rocks were forming made sense to me. I think we could also learn about new rocks by researching them and making reports about different rock types.

Yes they did. The lab helped us identify the different types of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks.NO,because they were the same thing every single time. We would've liked to find rocks around here since we won't run into to most of the rocks we learned about.
